Sci. Adv. 2026, 12, aec1846
This work introduces a new “hotspace” engineering strategy for SERS by coupling photonic nanojets with plasmonic nanoarrays, generating spatially extended electromagnetic enhancement regions (>110 nm) with high sensitivity (>10⁶ enhancement factor). The platform enables deep, label-free profiling of intact extracellular vesicles and achieves highly accurate colorectal cancer classification (99.8%), outperforming conventional SERS substrates.

Interfacial Chemistry in SERS: Mechanisms, Controls, and Materials
Emily Xi Tan, Cam Tu Tran, Gia Minh Kieu, In Yee Phang, Xing Yi Ling*
ACS Appl. Mater. Interfaces 2026, 18, 12, 17239–17252
This perspective reframes SERS as a chemically governed interfacial phenomenon, where molecular adsorption, geometry, and electronic coupling collectively determine signal strength and selectivity. By introducing a three-dimensional interfacial phase diagram and programmable material strategies, it enables rational control and predictive design of SERS platforms beyond traditional electromagnetic enhancement.

Transfer Learning-Assisted SERS: Predicting Molecular Identity and Concentration in Mixtures Using Pure Compound Spectra Emily Xi Tan, Jaslyn Ru Ting Chen, Desmond Wei Cheng Pang, Nguan Soon Tan, In Yee Phang, Xing Yi Ling Angewandte Chemie International Edition 2025, 64, e202504965
This Angewandte Chemie study presents a breakthrough strategy using transfer learning to identify and quantify molecular components in complex mixtures—without prior knowledge of their composition. Trained solely on pure compound spectra, the model achieves 100% identification accuracy and <3% quantitation error in binary to quaternary carnitine mixtures. This adaptive, data-efficient approach marks a major step forward in real-world SERS sensing and untargeted chemical analysis.
